The "Greatest Gift" was originally written by Phillip Stern and
later adapted to the movie loved by many known as "It's a Wonderful
Life.
In
the movie George's role in the town of Bedford Falls becomes more
important than he ever realized. Helping people own their own home. He
occasionally becomes disheartened, distraught and at times feels his
life is unfulfilling.
In the original story, George cries
out "I'm sick of everything!” . “I’m stuck here in this mudhole for
life, doing the same dull work day after day. Other men are leading
exciting lives, but I—well,
I’m just a small-town bank clerk that even the army didn’t want. I never did anything
really useful or interesting, and it looks as if I never will".
His
despair grew to the point that he wished he was never born. He measured
his self value by envying things he did not have. In his darkness he
could not see the tremendous value he provided to his community.
As
written in the original story "The Greatest Gift" George
was indeed given a great gift. He was shown how his life affected
others.
“Change me back,” George pleaded. “Change me back—please. Not just for
my sake but for others too. You don’t know what a mess this town is in.
You don’t understand, I’ve got to get back. They need me here.”
“I understand right enough,” the stranger said slowly. “I just wanted to make sure you
did. You had the greatest gift of all conferred upon you—the gift of life, of being a part of
this world and taking a part in it.
George had put people in front of money and in the end, he was a rich man.
The quote from It's a Wonderful Life:
Bread that this house may never know hunger
Salt that life may always have flavor
And wine that joy and prosperity may reign forever.
