Meeting your neighbors. I am often surprised at how many people purchase a home without ever talking to their potential neighbors. I realize that neighbors come and go with time and life changes. But I feel that sometimes a basic meet and greet can go a long way in developing a practical relationship with a close neighbor. A gentle informational conversation can steer off a future escalation. "Hey, I was thinking of building a fence along our mutual property line" What do you think of that idea? Many times folks just start in on something without mentioning the project to a neighbor. I'm not suggesting that your neighbor has to approve of your plans. Simply stating your intention clarifies the process so a potentially sensitive neighbor doesn't fill in the blanks with their imagination.

Here is an example: We bought a home in a rural location. I hauled our RV into the property and shortly after took it into the shop for repairs. Brought it back home for a day or two and left for a short camping trip returning two days later. I was new to the neighborhood. A couple weeks later I was informed by another neighbor to be careful because there was someone moving a "compound" into the area. After a brief conversation it turned out to be me!! Taking the RV back forth in a short procession on a driveway that had historically seen little to no use led to a neighbor making things up as they went. Odd example but nonetheless, very real. Solvable problem with some casual conversation.  As they say, talk is cheap. Litigation is expensive however! Run with a cool motor.
