Planning and building your home to meet your future needs is easier
than one might think with the options that are now available. Low entry
showers are no longer unattractive options. Roll in entry showers,
multiple control valves and attractive grab bars can add value and
convenience even if all you currently use it for is washing the family
dog.
Foundation planning allows for at least one entry to have only one or few low steps.
If
your home is going to be multiple levels consider making the stairway
slightly wider than the plans may call for to facilitate a handicap
stair climber in the future. Adding a little extra framing is not
terribly expensive to lag in mounting options at a later time. Take lots
of pictures showing measurements during ANY remodel. Place something in
the picture to confirm scale if a tape measure isn't an easy pic to
pull off.
Simply planning nice looking landscaping that
can be mowed from a riding lawn mower or a remote control mower is a
good idea. When I approach decrepitude, I plan on sitting in my
wheelchair and mowing my lawn from the deck with a remote control mower.
