2 for 1 is my rule on a home remodel. If you can't get 2 dollars back for every dollar spent you may want to reevaluate the process. Even if you are making changes to your home for yourself, it should still make financial sense. Ask your friends their opinion of your project. Get multiple opinions and draw something from each conversation. I rarely have a completely good idea on my own. It's usually a collection of input that ends up being a great idea. And don't just listen to the loudest wheel. A subtle opinion gently revealed may be a variable that ties the project all together. Last but not least, if someone holds up two paint colors and asks "which one do you like best"? Go with the one in their right hand. Unless of course they are left handed.
